Anterior Odontoid Fixation

Anterior Odontoid Fixation

The purpose of the procedure is to fix the broken bone in the neck. An incision is made in the front of the neck on the left side, and the trachea (windpipe) and esophagus are gently retracted out of the way to allow access to the front of the spine. A screw in then drilled into the broken bone (the odontoid, or dens) to hold the fracture still while it
heals. Sometimes, a patient’s body shape makes this procedure more difficult, and screws and rods must be inserted into the back of the neck to hold the bone still.

With this operation there will be an immediate improvement in pain and function. The success rate of anterior odontoid fixation is very high.
Patients who undergo these procedures are very satisfied with their decision to have surgery and hospital stay is brief. Post surgical pain is typically mild.

I went to 6 doctors that did not help me. I saw Dr. Gottlieb expecting to be operated on because I had such terrible pain. He diagnosed me with a sacroiliac issue and explained it to me. Dr. Gottlieb suggested I did not need surgery but recommended physical therapy instead, I have been doing it for 3 months and I am 90% cured. He is the best doctor I have ever come in contact with."

I had the kyphoplasty procedure done a few weeks ago and it has been amazing! I have gone from a 10 to a 2 as far as pain. It really has made a big impact, in things I could not do before without pain that I can do now. I have actually been blown away by it. The experience has been great, Dr. Gottlieb is great, everything about it has been positive.

  • Testimonials

I had incredible pain, 9 out of 10, with loss of sensation in my right leg and loss of strength. I could not stand for longer than 10-15 minutes and I had to sit, it was horrible. Since the surgery, I feel great, I feel strong and I have my sensation back. I am very happy.
